Description:

The Dartmouth College Archives documents the history of the College through the historical records of the institution, the three professional schools: Dartmouth Medical School (1769), Thayer School of Engineering (1867), and Amos Tuck School of Business Administration (1900), and the once-affiliated institutions of Moor's Charity School, and the Chandler School of Science and the Arts (1853-1894). The archives also document the history of the surrounding area through selected collections related to local businesses and organizations, including the Hanover Town Records. Student life and faculty work and research are represented through student organizations and selected collections of personal papers of students and faculty.

John W. Weeks Papers, 1877-1926

Weeks, John W. (John Wingate), 1860-1926. Papers of the banker and politician, John Wingate Weeks. Includes correspondence, copies of speeches, newspaper clippings, photographs, and financial papers, and other papers related to his career in banking and in the government. Correspondents include Calvin Coolidge, Warren G. Harding, Henry Cabot Lodge, and Theodore Roosevelt.

Weeks was born in 1860 in Lancaster, N.H. He was graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1881 and was discharged from the U.S. Navy in 1883. He was an Assistant Land Commissioner for the Florida Southern Railroad, 1886-1888, and a partner in the firm, Hornblower & Weeks, 1888-1912. From 1890 to 1898 he commanded the 2nd Division, Auxiliary U.S. Naval Force on the Atlantic Coast. He served as a member of the Military Advisory Board of Mass. and the Military Board of Examiners, 1894-1900, and as a member of the Board of Visitors, U.S. Naval Academy during 1896.
Weeks was an Alderman in Newton, Mass., 1900-1902, and Mayor of Newton, 1903-1904. In 1905 he became chairman of the Republican State Convention in Mass. and was elected U.S. Congressman from the 12th District, Mass.; he was elected U.S. Senator from Mass. in 1913. He was a candidate for the presidential nomination at the Republican National Convention in Chicago in 1916 but served as a senator until 1919. From 1921 to 1925 he was Secretary of War in the cabinets of President Harding and President Coolidge.
