George F. Schutt’s National Hotel research documents, 1828-1907

Documents consist of letters, newspaper clippings, and research notes, primarily relating to the "National Hotel Disease," a mysterious illness that infected the hotel during visit by Pres. James Buchanan in 1857. Includes a letter to proprietor George F. Schutt (27 Nov. 1907) from James Ridgeway, a guest at the hotel during the outbreak, describing his experience with the disease; letter to the hotel enclosing a hotel bill (1846); a copy of a letter (1904) by G.F. Schutt to the Oldroyd Lincoln memorial collection, currently located in Ford's Theatre, that includes the names of attendees at an 1861 dinner for Abraham Lincoln; and research notes including typed and handwritten copies of excerpts from published materials that describe the National Hotel; and an advertisement appearing in the Louisville Public Advertiser, 19 Sept. 1828.
