David Jayne Hill Papers, 1866-1930

Hill, David Jayne, 1850-1932. Educator, diplomat and historian born in Plainfield, New Jersey. He was president of Bucknell University (1879-1888), University of Rochester(1888-1896), Assistant Secretary of State (1898-1903), Minister to Switzerland (1903-1905), Minister to the Netherlands (1905-1908) and Ambassador to Germany (1908-1911). Active in the peace movement during his retirement years in Washington, D.C. Includes extensive correspondence; the draft of an autobiography entitled "Confidences of a grandfather" (typescript with holograph revisions); addresses, lectures, genealogical data, sermons, clippings and autographs. A separate scrapbook bound in vellum includes national coats of arms, signatures of heads of states present at the Second Hague Peace Conference of 1907, sketches by Joseph Israels and John Sargent and a musical fragment by Ignace Paderewski. Correspondents include: Andrew Carnegie, Calvin Coolidge, Warren G. Harding, John Hay, William McKinley, Ignace J. Paderewski, Auguste Rodin, Theodore Roosevelt, Elihu Root, Augustus H. Saint-Gaudens and William H. Taft. Finding aid: Register of the Hill Family Collection (126 p. ; 29 cm.).
