Ellen Herman is University of Oregon's Professor of 20th-Century American History and Department Head. Her interests include human sciences, social engineering, and therapeutic culture. She published her first book in 1995, The Romance of American Psychology: Political Culture in the Age of Experts. Currently, she is writing a book about 20th-century child adoption, which is entitled Kinship by Design. Among her recent publications are "Can Kinship Be Designed and Still Be Normal? The Curious Case of Child Adoption" in Histories of the Normal and the Abnormal: Social and Cultural Histories of Norms and Normativity and "Rules for Realness: Child Adoption in a Therapeutic Culture" in Therapeutic Culture: Triumph and Defeat.
