He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII and received the Silver Star for gallantry. Mitchell was attorney general in the Nixon administration (1969-1972), and was a key figure in the Watergate scandal; he would served 19 months in prison for his role in Watergate. Mitchell died November 9, 1988, and was buried at Arlington National Cemetery with full military honors.
