Benjamin Harrison had long been involved in Republican Party politics. He served as a U.S. senator from 1880 to 1887. In the 1888 presidential election, he was the Republican Party nominee, running against incumbent President Grover Cleveland. When the votes were tallied, Cleveland received the larger number of popular votes, but Harrison carried the Electoral College, thus giving Harrison the victory.
