Mrs. Lucretia Garfield

October 22, 1870

When her husband was elected President, Lucretia “Crete” Rudolph Garfield was suddenly thrust onto the Washington, D.C., social circuit she had tried for years to avoid. Although she adapted to her role as national hostess, Crete Garfield far preferred the role of political and intellectual partner to her husband.  However, Mrs. Garfield is probably best remembered for her caring devotion to her husband after he was shot in 1881.
