As President, Ulysses Grant was determined to follow Lincoln's policy of reconciliation with the South rather than one of retribution or appeasement. However, Grant's support for civil and political rights for African Americans and federal government intervention in the South alienated a faction within his party. This opposition to the President's policies led the Liberal Republicans to spilt from the Republican Party.
