Franklin Pierce served as the fourteenth President of the United States from 1853 to 1857. His most significant achievement was signing the Kansas-Nebraska Act, which repealed the Missouri Compromise of 1820 and organized the Kansas and Nebraska territories on the basis of “popular sovereignty.” Many hoped the act would lessen the divide over slavery but it increased national debates and tensions over slavery between North and South.
