Grover Cleveland entered his second presidential term in 1893 in the midst of one of the most severe depressions in American history. Cleveland's most forceful response to the depression was to blame the Sherman Silver Purchase Act of 1890 for the nation's economic troubles. Despite its successful repeal, Cleveland's failure to deal with the depression proved costly for the Democratic Party in the congressional elections of 1894.
