President John Tyler

April 30, 1841
Source: The Library of Congress

Originally elected by the Whig Party as vice president, John Tyler became President when his predecessor died in office. However, he had little in common with the Whig Party. During Tyler's presidency, the Whig Party became so infuriated with him that it expelled President Tyler from the party and tried to have him impeached. The Whigs had to settle for one of their committees passing a resolution of censure against the President.
