On March 30, 1981, President Ronald Reagan waved to a crowd after delivering a speech at the Washington Hilton Hotel. Moments later, President Reagan was hit by a bullet fired by John Hinckley, Jr.  The President was rushed to George Washington University Hospital for treatment of a punctured lung. He made a full recovery, and his bravery and humor in the face of this crisis contributed greatly to his popularity.
