July 28, 1944
Source: National Archives

President Franklin Roosevelt, second from left, reviews a map of the Pacific Theater with General Douglas MacArthur, far left, Admiral William Leahy, third from left, and Admiral Chester Nimitz, standing, in Hawaii. After initial defeats in the Pacific Theater, the American forces turned to the strategy of “island-hopping” in 1943. By 1944, the Allies had won key battles in the Philippines, New Guinea, Saipan, and Guam.
