The “Spoils System”

When he came into office, President Andrew Jackson initiated sweeping removals among high-ranking government officials. He claimed to be purging the corruption that came with long tenures and restoring the opportunity for government service to the citizenry at large through “rotation in office.” Jackson replaced many government officials on partisan grounds and inaugurated the “spoils system,” in which Jackson loyalists were rewarded with government positions and titles.
