In 1801, Thomas Jefferson was elected the third President of the United States, defeating the incumbent President John Adams. Taking into consideration the transfer of political power from the Federalists to Democratic-Republicans, Jefferson appealed for national unity proclaiming, “We are all Republicans, we are all Federalists.” Jefferson won his reelection bid in 1804, serving two terms as President.
