Washington and the Constitutional Convention

To address the shortcomings of the Articles of Confederation, a secret meeting of all the states was held in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in May 1787. Washington was unanimously chosen to head this assembly, known now as the Constitutional Convention. The provisions of the new Constitution established the foundation of American government and the office of the presidency.
